Federer Set Eyes On Olympic Gold After Winning Landmark London

(dailynewyorknews) – Roger Federer wants to add a gold medal in singles to his name in tennis after winning his 70th ATP World Tour Finals in London.

The world number three defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Sunday in what was his sixth victory in the final event of the season.

Federer secured his title triumph in 70 years of his career in the 100 final, a place to compensate for the fact that he failed to win a Grand Slam season for the first time since 2002.

But 30 years have committed to return stronger next year as it bids for a gold medal in men’s singles at the Olympic Games in London in 2012, to go with the one that won the double in Beijing in 2008.

If further incentive were needed, which will be held at Wimbledon – Federer, where he calls the “My Club” – a place where he won six times.

He told CNN World Sport: “That’s why I took some time off before the Fall, in the hope that I will have more power and cooler when the Olympics come around next year.

“We’re going to prepare as you can, because we had a difficult Olympics, on the other side of the planet, this time we will play at Wimbledon.

“It ‘very unusual for the best players, and we all feel in our lives we will be fantastic. I can not wait to play” my “team, we hope to win Olympic gold. We’ll see what happens, but they are excited already. ”

Federer was overshadowed by most of the year by the Serbian Novak Djokovic, who went on an incredible 43 games unbeaten, and received the Australia Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open crowns.

The Swiss made the final at the French Open, but were defeated Rafael Nadal in four, and also suffered a heartbreaking loss in the semifinals at Flushing Meadows in New York, wasting two match points against Djokovic loses before the series five.

But he put together a solid surface for the 2011-campaign to win titles in Paris and Basel before his triumph in London.

“That’s what champions are made,” he told CNN World Sport Anchor Alex Thomas. “After a big loss if you are able to come back and show that the losses occur.

“Novak has had a fantastic year, and Rafa, we know how hard it was again on clay, so maybe for me was not so much to gain in a period where it was difficult for me.

“What I was able to save the best for the end is fantastic and to write history, here in London, to win my sixth Tour Finals in advance, a record that I am very proud.”

Federer said his strong finish of the season so it was a warning to his rivals that could start the 2012 season with a bang.

“Of course I’m exhausted and want to go on vacation but I’m looking forward to next year because usually when I finished, I also recommend a fresh start next season strongly.

“We expect a great season next year on the circuit – it’s not going to be easy, I know, but it’s good to get the wins and all I want to do now is to celebrate.”
