Zimbabwe police recover 11 people drowned on Christmas Day

Harare, Zimbabwe (dailynewyorknews) – Police in Zimbabwe said Monday 11 people – including five children – drowned when their boat capsized in strong winds on the afternoon of Christmas Day.

“We just finished recovering 11 bodies,” Andrew Phiri, spokesman for the Zimbabwe police told. “The boat sank after being hit by a wave how do you people enjoyed on Christmas Day . ”

Phiri said eight people including three crew members managed to swim to the shore of Lake infested with crocodiles Chivero about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) southwest of Harare and alerted the authorities about the the incident.

“The police unit underwater immediately started the rescue mission, but only completed the recovery of bodies this morning that the ship sank while it was dark,” he said.

Meanwhile, said Phiri, an explorer of the game in the same lake drowned Saturday evening after a boat sank.

The identities of the dead and details of the incident were not disclosed.

“The two incidents are related, except that the waves are a common cause of incidents,” said Phiri.

Lake Chivero is now a favorite spot for tourists to Zimbabwe tourism as the country began to recover in the last two years. The Zimbabwe Tourism has suffered a blow in 2000 when the government of President Robert Mugabe launched a land reform program of the violent against white commercial farmers.
